Develop phase/ Media Components

Hello everyone,

Hope this blog finds you well and patient.

In my last blog, I wrote about the Design phase. I shared my experience and some tips I think that are helpful to all of us. Now, it is time to discuss about Develop phase in order to be successful in the presentations of our projects.

Even without reading the lecture, we know that the word "Develop" stands for creating or constructing something. In our case, as we could read in the lecture, the Develop phase means to produce the media components such as text, graphics, animations, audio, video as well as the programming (or authoring) of the program.

The last project experience I had was "the Interactive Powerpoint Project". To be honest, I personally find the other two steps "Decide and Design" way easier than Develop phase. I find it easy to decide about the topic, sub topics or to boomerang my ideas. I always take notes on what or how I want to create a project, but what always delays me are always those little things that make the project whole.

I've said it so many times that projects without the use of multimedia are boring and you already know that having a boring  atmosphere in the                                                                                    classroom  is my greatest nightmare as a future teacher. Our role is to make clear to our students what we expect from them and their presentations. It                                                                      doesn't mean to make them fit frameworks, in contrary, they should be free to create and to be original. What we can do, is to let them know                                                                                        how to use technology properly.

What makes a project interesting?

Graphics are visual images or representations. They include picture, drawings, paintings, web graphics etc. We can create graphics by using programs ColorIt, CorelDraw, Adobe PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, and Adobe Illustrator.

Animations include graphic files that include movement. They are used to convey and reinforce complex concepts and add a wealth of information and excitement.

Audio includes recorded narration, music, and sound effects. Audio can assist students’learning, as well as add realism,  excitement, and motivation to the program.

Digital Video refers to motion sequences that have been recorded with a computer and saved as a computer file.

What I stated above is nothing but a brief summary of the lecture. What those elements have in common, except of being multimedia elements, is that they attract the students' attention to develop their interest in the subject or the particular project, as well as they emphasize the key points for students to remember. The use of many multimedia elements can be described, in my opinion, by this quote from William Glasser: "We learn 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we discuss, 80% of what we experience and 95% of what we teach to others".

By developing a project, we are almost ready to present it. It doesn't mean to neccessarily be a project, it can also be a lesson (for teachers). Referring back to the quote, for our message to be conveyed and our goals accomplished, we should involve graphics, animations, audio and digital video accompanied by discussions. The whole process is the experience that happens in the classroom. By using these elements in our project, we make the experience more interesting, providing also exposure to the target language. Students learn in a stress free environment, they may ask and answer questions without being afraid of being mocked by other students. Furthermore, students who are presenting the project will definitely remember the information for a long time. Even in this step, we should never forget about our audience and its' needs, because afterall, the whole presentation is about the fulfilment of these needs.

To sum up, all the steps of the DDD-E model are related to each-other and without each-other, the project won't be as successful as we                                                                                                  intend it to be. Don't forget to explore your creativity and don't be discouraged if things seem too difficult. I wish everyone the best of  luck in the                                                                                presentation of the project!

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog, I appreciate it!

Please feel free to share your opinion!

                                                P.s. Don't forget to stay safe :)

  1. Hi Elda!
Couldn't agree with you more, the projects without the use of multimedia are quite boring. That's why we should always consider the idea of using them when necessary. Very good post.

  2. Hi Elda! I found your blog very interesting. You have explained in an excellent manner the media effects that make a project interesting. Also, I liked the illustrations with images. They made the topic easier for me to undestand. Well done!
